MULLEN- The Pirate wrestling was on the road over the weekend, participating in the Mullen Invite.
Four of the six varsity wrestlers came home with medals, as Elwood took home seventh place overall.
Walter Flint failed to medal this weekend, going 1-2 overall at 119 pounds. The lone win for Flint came in the second match, winning by pin over S-E-M at :53 seconds.
At 125 pounds, Michael Daake took home a gold medal for the Pirates going undefeated on the day for Elwood. Daake first defeated High Plains by pin at 3:52, then winning his semi-final match over Elm Creek by a 8-3 decision. Daake then defeated Jeremy Rice of Sandhills/Thedford by pin in the final at 2:31 to take home the championship.
Will Rahjes was the only wrestler from Elwood to wrestle more then three matches on the day, needing to wrestle a fourth match to take home third this weekend. Rahjes took home the bronze, after defeating Drew Spencer of Mullen in overtime 2-1.
Thad Reiman struggled Saturday at 140 pounds, as Reiman went 0-2 on the day. Reiman lost both matches by pin in the first period.
Mitch Kubert was the next Pirate to bring home some hardware, taking home second place at 145 pounds. Kubert advance to the final after defeating Hershey by pin at 1:55 in the first period. Kubert took on Dylan Sullivan of Garden County, where Sullivan got the best of Kubert, pinning him in the second period.
Dillon Tiede was the last of the Elwood wrestlers to place, taking home third at 189 pounds. Tiede lost his opening match to Clinton Fales of Anselmo-Merna by a 8-0 decision. Tiede rebounded nicely, pinning Matt McGahan of Garden County in their third-place match.
Elwood finished 64 team points, which was good enough to take home seventh place overall. The 64 points is a great finish, even with the small numbers that Elwood has had on the roster all season.
Plainview took the team title with 163 points, with host Mullen taking second at 112 points.
Elwood is on the road this Saturday as they travel to Arapahoe for the Arapahoe Invite. The meet is set to start at 10 a.m.
