VALENTINE – The Cozad wrestling team saw its stock for the state tournament rise, as they crowned three champions at the Southwest Conference Wrestling Tournament over the weekend.
Logan Hunke was the first conference champion for the Haymakers, winning at 112 pounds. Hunke made quick work of Dillon Larson of Gothenburg in semi-final match, pinning him in 48 seconds. Hunke then took home the gold, after winning by technical fall over Zane Smith of Broken Bow 16-0. Hunke looked to be a favorite heading into the district tournament Friday.
Caleb Lucero will look for a state tournament berth Friday after placing second at 125 pounds. Lucero opened with a first-round bye, then defeated Justin Larson by a 14-11 decision in the semi-finals. Lucero took on Eric Bopp of Valentine, where Lucero fell to the Badger by pin in the second period.
Kyle Carlson became the second champion for Cozad, winning at 135 pounds. Carlson took out Tanner Clark of Ainsworth 15-7 in the opening round, then pinning Dillon Lapp of Ogallala to advance to the championship. Carlson took on Marcus Nelson of Valentine for the championship, where Carlson hung on for the gold, winning by a 6-2 decision.
At 189 pounds, there was never a doubt as to who came out on top. Senior Tanner Sturgeon pinned his way to the conference championship, remaining unbeaten on the year. Sturgeon pinned Michael Gill of Ogallala at 3:12, then pinned Dan Sanford of Minden in the second period to take home the gold.
Heavyweight sensation Pedro Garcia is stating his case for the state tournament, and also as a favorite next season, taking home silver during the weekend. Garcia opened up his tournament with a third period pin of Jonathan Smith of Valentine, then pinning Brian Springer of Ogallala. Garcia fell in the championship match to Nathaniel Allen of Ainsworth in the first period. Garcia looks to be one of at least five wrestlers who could be packing their bags for the Qwest Center.
Cozad took home fifth place overall with 92.5 points. Host Valentine took home the team championship, scoring 166.5 points. Cozad will host the district tournament on Friday.
