LEXINGTON – The Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference held its annual tournament at Lexington High School over the weekend.
The eight-team tournament saw many skilled wrestlers from around the state, including in Central Nebraska.
Lexington saw nine wrestlers medal on the weekend, taking seventh as team in this year’s tournament.
At 119 pounds, the Minutemen saw their first medalist in freshman Seth Kopf, taking home sixth place. Kopf lost his opening round match to Parker Ridgeway of Columbus by pin in the first period. Kopf won his first consolation match against Zach Clodfelter of Hastings by pin in the second period to advance to the medal round. Kopf lost to Daniel Kumm of Norfolk to move to the fifth-place match, where he lost to Jonah Navarrete of North Platte by pin in the second period. Kopf is currently 6-11 on the year in his first varsity season.
Reece Ureste earned his first medal of the season, taking home fifth place at 130 pounds. Ureste was pinned in his opening round match to Blake Anderson of Norfolk in 41 seconds to move to the consolation round. After receiving a first round bye, Ureste was already placed in the medal round. Ureste lost the semi-final match to Grant Holscher of North Platte to move to the fifth-place match. Ureste got his second win of the season, earning a 9-6 decision over Chris Dillman of Scottsbluff to take home fifth.
Manuel Dominguez took home fifth place as well for the Minutemen at 135 pounds. Dominguez lost to Luke Parsley of Scottsbluff by a 12-11 decision, moving him to the consolation match. Dominguez received a bye in the first round to move into the medal round. Dominguez lost to Rory Little of North Platte in the consolation semis, to move to the fifth-place match. Dominguez met up with Parsley once again, where Dominguez dominated the match, winning by a 12-5 major decision. Dominguez is currently 6-14 on the year.
At 140 pounds, Rolando Gonzalez took home a fourth-place finish for the Minutemen. Gonzalez was pinned by Justin Richter of Scottsbluff in the second period, then won two matches to make it to the consolation finals. In the third place match, Gonzalez lost a close on to Keldon Osterman of McCook, by a 5-2 decision. Gonzalez looks to make his second straight trip to state heading to districts on Friday.
Senior Bill Reynoso looks to get the momentum train rolling after missing a few meets. Reynoso took home another fourth-place finish for Lexington. Reynoso won his opening round match against Colby Lind of Norfolk by a 12-6 decision. Reynoso was knocked out the championship bracket, losing to eventual champion Matt Driml of Kearney 8-0 to move to the consolation bracket. Reynoso defeated Thein Truong of Hastings 7-3 to move to the third-place match, where he met up with Lind in a rematch from earlier in the day. Lind got the best of Reynoso in the second match, winning by a 5-4 decision. Reynoso is currently 12-7 on the year.
At Heavyweight, Alex Munoz took home the last medal for the Minutemen, earning a fourth-place finish. Munoz took out Ross Stewart of McCook in the first period, then losing to eventual champion Aaron Wichman of Norfolk by a 9-2 decision. Munoz defeated Chris Williamson of Hastings in the semis of the consolation bracket to have a shot at the bronze medal. Munoz fell short, losing 5-2 to Jose Leon of Columbus. Munoz’s record currently is at 8-9.
Lexington finished with 64 total team points, which was 17 points ahead of last place Hastings. Kearney took home the conference title with 237.5 points, with Norfolk coming in a tight second with 214 points. Columbus took third barely behind Norfolk, with 213 points. Lexington travels to Cozad on Friday for the district tournament.
