Pirates fall on road to Elm Creek, tangle with Axtell

February 12, 2010

ELM CREEK – The Elwood girls basketball team traveled alone on Tuesday, as they clashed with Elm Creek.
The Pirates looked good in the beginning, however the Buffs used a stingy defense and a made the shots that they needed to take down Elwood 48-37.
Elwood began the game with a quick lead and after one quarter, held an 11-10 advantage. Elm Creek used the strong defense to shut down Elwood to only four points in the second quarter and by halftime, the Pirates saw their lead turn into an eight-point deficit.
The third quarter was better offensively for Elwood, but was still outscored by the Buffs 13-12 to trail by nine going into the final frame. Elwood couldn’t find any defensive consistency to contain Elm Creek as they outscored Elwood 12-10 in the fourth to capture the victory.
Elwood was led by freshman Rachel Mahlberg, with a team-high 11 points. Sister Bailey struggled throughout the game, managing only six points. Sami Ferguson contributed to the offense with nine points.
For Elm Creek, two players were in double figures, as Aisha Bourke poured in a game-high 17 points, while Hillary Knake attributed to 10 points.
The loss for the Pirates drops them to 9-8 on the year. The Lady Buffs improve to 8-10 on the season.
Elwood boys and girls took on Axtell Friday evening in a key FKC clash. Story, stats and photos will be in the Feb. 17 edition of the Clipper-Herald.
