ARNOLD – The Elwood track team was on the road Friday as they took part in the Arnold Invite.
The boys and girls put on solid performances throughout the day as both the boys and girls teams finished near the top of the standings.
For the boys’, four tracksters swept up 14 medals as the Pirates took fourth place overall.
Seniors Braeden Banzhaf and Jesse Roberts led the charge with four medals apiece. Banzhaf took fourth place overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.2 seconds, also third place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. Banzhaf also finished in a tie for third place in with his teammates in the 4×400 relay, with a time of 3:43.7. Finally, Banzhaf took a gold medal in the mile run, winning by just .9 seconds, in a time of 5:12.0.
Roberts took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.9, along with third place in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 9 inches. Roberts finished also took two medals in two relay events to round out his day.
Senior Brandt Banzhaf took second place in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet and also took fifth in the discus with a toss of 117 feet, 9 inches.
Walter Flint was able to take fifth overall in the pole vault with an attempt of 8 feet, 6 inches.
The Pirates finished with a total of 57 points, which was good enough to finish fourth overall. Burwell was the overall boys’ winner with 110 points.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Pirates also had a solid day, finishing in sixth place.
Bailey Mahlberg took sixth place in the triple jump with a leap of 29 feet, 8 ½ inches.
Lexie Remmenga was one of the top medalists for Elwood Friday able to take home a few medals on the day, taking fifth in the 400-meter dash, third in the long jump and third in the 1600-meter run. Remmenga also took a medal in one of the relay races.
Skyler Wigstone was also a top performer for Elwood, taking four medals for the Lady Pirates. Wigstone took sixth in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the 200-meter dash and took two medals in the relay races.
Molly Weissert was able to take home a couple medals on Friday, as she took fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles and took fifth in the high jump.
The Lady Pirates tallied 42 total team points, which took sixth place overall. Burwell swept the meet as the Lady Longhorns took the team title as well.
The Pirate track teams are in action next at the Bertrand Invite, set for Friday.
