ELM CREEK – The Overton track team wrapped up its regular season Thursday with the Elm Creek Invitational.
The Eagles used this meet as a measuring stick as the district track meet rapidly approaches next week on Wednesday, May 12.
The girls wound up in ninth place in the 11 team event led by the Shelton Bulldogs, who won the girls’ division easily with 124 team points.
FKC Champion distance runner Kayla Stauffer continued to impress with districts right around the corner, as she took second place in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:14.
Stauffer also took second place in the 3200-meter run with her time of 13:45. Shelby Terry of Shelton took gold in both events.
Stauffer’s silvers were enough to launch Overton into ninth place overall on the day with 16 total points.
The Overton senior looks to compete for a trip to the state track meet at Omaha Burke Stadium on May 21.
The boys’ division saw a little more success as the Eagles finished in seventh place overall.
Senior Jared Shafer took home some hardware Thursday as he took fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10 inches, while taking fourth in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 8.5 inches.
Sophomore Jacob Olmstead has been battling Shafer in the shot put for most of the season, however this time around Olmstead prevailed in the shot, as he finished in third place with his toss of 48 feet, 6 inches.
Jacob Olmstead currently has the third longest toss in Class D with 48 feet, 6 inches. Shafer has the fourth longest at 47 feet, 8.5 inches
Olmstead also competed in the discus event with brother Zach Olmstead, in which the brothers finished in second and third place.
Zach took second with a throw of 149 feet, 10 inches, while Jacob took third with a toss of 143 feet, 11 inches.
Zach’s throw at Elm Creek put him on the leaderboard for the discus in Class D, with David Meyer of Scribner-Snyder leading the charge with the best toss of 167 feet, 7 inches.
Senior Jared Hodgson was a silver medalist in the 200-meter dash, finishing in a time of 23.9 seconds.
Fellow teammate Chuck Else, also a senior, took sixth place in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 5:25.
Ethan Enochs also took home a medal in a distance race Thursday as he took third place in the 3200-meter run, completing it in a time of 11:42.
Finally, Overton’s relay teams took some hardware, as the 4×100 relay finished in a three way tie for fourth place, tying with Arapahoe and Shelton with a time of 47.3 seconds.
The Eagles’ 4×400 relay also was a medalist as they edged out rival Axtell for fourth place with a time of 3:49.
The Eagles finished in seventh position, only three points behind sixth place finisher Medicine Valley.
The Eagles’ track teams are off until Thursday, when they take part in the District track meet, set to take place at Dundy County-Stratton.
Teams taking part in the district track meet are: Bertrand, Elwood, Eustis-Farnam, Hayes Center, Hitchcock County, Loomis, Maywood, Medicine Valley, Overton and Wauneta-Palisade.
The top four in each running event will qualify for the State Track Meet, while the top three in each field event will qualify.
