LEXINGTON – As the stats of the Nebraska Schools Activities Association were updated for boys’ and girls’ soccer over the weekend, one name was placed at the top of list for all Lexington soccer fans to celebrate over.
Former Minutemaid goalkeeper Rebecca Fong, who played for the Lex squad from 2007-2010, was placed at the top as the all-time saves leader for Class B soccer.
Fong tallied 746 saves during her tenure as the goalkeeper, which also ranks second all-time in the state of Nebraska behind Marissa Niday of Fremont, who saved 907 shots from 06-09.
Fong, who received news of the record over the weekend on Facebook, credits her strong faith in helping achieve success in front of the net.
“I think it’s pretty great,” Fong said. “I know being strong in my Christian faith, standing in the goal I wouldn’t have been able to be the goalie I was without Him.”
Fong spent her senior season training with the Minutemen soccer team and head coach Mike Zarate, who challenged her and made her a better goalkeeper.
“I would go over and work with the boys and they would shoot at me,” Fong said. “Obviously it was more intense than the girls, so it made me faster and more accurate and so I know that really helped a lot.”
The Minutemaids finished the season 2-12 overall, but Fong’s name will now stand among some of Nebraska’s best ever soccer players.
Fong’s record can be found under the “State records” link in the soccer section of the NSAA website, which is www.nsaahome.org.
