Lex boys’ tennis crushes York, blasted by GICC

September 7, 2010 • By

LEXINGTON – The one thing that the Lexington boys’ tennis team didn’t want to see Thursday afternoon was 30 mph gusts as they hosted a triangular with York and Grand Island Central Catholic.
The Minutemen opened up the day against York, in which Lexington dominated the match from start to finish as Lexington took their first match 7-2.
Aaron Luther and Joel Monter were right on cue in their #1 Doubles match against Faller and Postier of York. Their aggressive style of play was no match for the Dukes as the Minutemen pair shut down York 8-0.
In #2 Doubles, the team of Henry Bran and Shad Wellmann, faced an early hole, trailing 2-4, but eventually coming back and remaining undefeated in doubles play, winning the match 8-5.
Lexington won five of six matches in singles play, with one of the most notable matches being Sam Morgan defeating York’s David Postier 8-2, after trailing early in the match.
“I was exceptionally pleased with our play against York,” head coach Ben Klein said. “I felt like we accomplished what we set out to do.”
After dismantling the Dukes, the Minutemen took a short break before taking perennial powerhouse Grand Island Central Catholic.
GICC flexed their tennis muscle toward the Minutemen, as GICC rolled to a 9-1 victory.
Monter and Luther struggled in their match with Turner Fahey and Alex Wirth, as every game of their match was decided by deuce, with GICC coming out on top 8-4.
Bran and Wellmann were also in a barn burner with John Hsu and Travis Hayes, taking it to a tiebreaker. The match was the high school version of Isner/Mahut, as GICC snuck past the Minutemen pair 9-8 (14-12).
Lexington’s lone victory over the Crusaders Thursday afternoon came from Aaron Luther as he took out Hsu in singles competition 8-4.
“Against GICC we made way too many mental errors,” Klein said. “The positive thing we did was we continued to compete.”
The Minutemen travel to Holdrege today to take part in the Holdrege Triangular with the Dusters and Columbus High. The Holdrege Tri is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
