OXFORD – Volleyball was in the air Thursday night as Dawson County area teams were beginning their fall season.
The Cozad Lady Haymakers were on the road for their opening game of the season, taking on Southern Valley.
After a dismal first set, Cozad battle back and forth with the Lady Eagles, however Southern Valley managed to sweep the Makers Thursday night 3-0.
Southern Valley took Game 1 in quick fashion 25-13, then coach Mary Gohl rallied the troops for the second game.
“Our hitters weren’t afraid to swing hard and our defense played very scrappy ball,” Gohl said. “We talked about staying aggressive throughout the game and they did.”
Cozad came out swinging in the second set, matching point for point with the talented Lady Eagles. Game 2 went past the 25-point mark as Southern Valley edged the Makers in the second set 27-25.
Falling into a 2-0 hole, Cozad wasn’t ready to hop on the bus home yet. The final set proved to be just as exciting as both teams once again went point for point with one another.
In the end, Southern Valley was too much for Cozad, as the Lady Eagles finished them off, sweeping the match and winning Set 3, 25-22.
