Gothenburg’s Lake Helen and Lafayette Park also provide travelers respite and both are located on the north edge of Gothenburg, just follow Lake Avenue/Highway 47.
The park is home to the Lafayette Park Campgrounds, which has 32 water and electrical hookups for overnight camping, as well as a number of tent spaces. All are on grass. There is a dump station for camper’s convenience, as well as showers and restrooms. Campers can also enjoy the various walking trails, horseshoe courts and the acclaimed GEO Caching, a national treasure hunt. There is a shelter and numerous picnic tables and several outdoor grills and campfire spots, playground equipment and plenty of shade to make this a comfortable picnic spot. Fees are $10 a night for a four-person tent and $15 a night for RVs.
For light recreation, a bridge provides a crossover spot to the Lake Helen walking trail and there are sand volleyball courts on the Lake Helen side. Fishing is permitted at the lake and the canal trailrace below with a valid Nebraska fishing license. Within walking distance of the park (two blocks) is a miniature golf course and bowling alley.
For another scenic camping view in Gothenburg, KOA Campground is located south of I-80 along the Platte River. It offers full water/electrical hook-ups, showers, laundry, a pool and convenience store as well as wi-fiand a data port. Cabins and sites for RVs, pull-thrus and tents are available for any level of camper. Prices for RVs are $25-$32, tents are $18-$22; and cabins are $38-$44.
