One of the most popular recreation sites in central Nebraska is Johnson Lake, which features 18 miles of shoreline and 2,500 water surface acres.
Located seven miles southwest of Lexington, the lake features camping, angling and water sports. The Nebraska Game & Parks Commission manages 78 acres of land and these State Recreation Areas require park entry permits.
An annual permit is $20 ($10 for a second vehicle) or $4 per day. The largest recreation area lies on the southeast corner of the lake. Facilities include 82 gravel camping pads with electrical hook-ups and more, four paved handicapped accessible camping pads, handicapped accessible restrooms, picnic sites, a dump station and fishing cleaning stations.
Nebraska State Parks now offer an on-line reservation system to better serve their customers. Internet on-line reservations for Johnson Lake and other state parks allow customers the convenience of booking their own reservations from home. Maps and photographs of campsites assist the customer in booking. To reserve a site go to: www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/permits/reserve.
A doublewide boat ramp at the inlet and a protective jetty, along with a handicapped accessible boat dock enhances the recreation area. A shower house is open next to restrooms in the inlet area campground. It has six shower stalls and a handicapped accessible shower/restroom stall.
In addition to the many forms of boating, fishing is popular. Channel and flathead catfish, crappie, drum, northern pike, walleye and white bass grab the bait at Johnson Lake.
A variety of businesses are scattered around the lake, including a convenience store and gas station, go-karts, one marina, one boat repair shop, a Laundromat and restaurants with fare ranging from pizza to burgers to seafood.
